Guernsey Museums & Galleries
Guernsey Museums & Galleries is a service provided by the government of Guernsey, a British Crown Dependency located in the Channel Islands. The museum service is a division of the department of Culture and Leisure, full details of which can be found on the main States of Guernsey website together with a search facility which also covers this website.
Jersey Heritage Trust
Jersey Heritage was founded in 1981. We are an independent organisation that receives an annual grant from the States of Jersey to support our running costs. Admission income from visitors and support from sponsors are also vital to keep us operating.
In Jersey we are responsible for the island's major historic sites, award-winning museums and public archives. We hold collections of artefacts, works of art, documents, specimens and information relating to Jersey's history, culture and environment. These collections define the island, hold the evidence for its historical development and act as the community's memory.
Subterranea Britannica
Subterranea Britannica is a UK-based society for all those interested in man-made and man-used underground structures and space. Founded in 1974, the society (often known simply as Sub Brit) has grown to over a thousand members. Our interests cover all manner of underground sites, from Neolithic flint mines to nuclear bunkers.
The site contains a special section on 'Fortress Alderney', which includes information and high resolution images of a number of important German fortifications.
The Alderney Tapestry
Created by Alderney residents Kate Russell and Pauline Black, it involved over 400 Alderney residents and visitors, aged 4 to 100. The Alderney Bayeux Tapestry Finale, measuring just under 3 metres in length and 50 cms in height – compared to the original Bayeux Tapestry which extends to nearly 70 metres - has made a big impact on all who have been involved, including Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.
The Guernsey Society
The societies aims are to promote, maintain and stimulate interest in all matters concerning the Bailiwick of Guernsey, its past, present and future - and keeping alive the "Spirit of Guernsey" both in the Island and overseas.
Alderney Wildlife Trust
The Alderney Wildlife Trust evolved from the island's conservation volunteer organisation in 2002 to help manage and protect Alderney's diverse habitats from the threat of new development and large scale agricultural abandonment.
Since then the Trust has expanded rapidly, with a growing number of dedicated members and volunteers both on and off island.
Alderney Maritime Trust
The Alderney Maritime Trust (known as ‘the Trust’) is a charitable association that was established by the States of Alderney in 1993 to support the work on the Alderney Elizabethan Wreck. It is an entirely volunteer organisation.
"To find, salvage and preserve ships of historic or naval importance or interest which have been wrecked or lost in Alderney’s waters, and the remains, cargoes and artefacts of such ships, so that they may be conserved, studied and displayed for the benefit and education of the inhabitants of the Island and elsewhere."
States of Alderney
The Channel Islands have never been subject to the British Parliament and have always been self-governing units under the direct rule of the Crown acting through the Privy Council. According to constitutional custom, the Crown does not interfere in Island politics, save when some vital constitutional change is necessary, and never in local affairs. Bureaucracy barely exists in the Channel Islands and least of all in Alderney. In this respect the political position of Alderney is unique in the British Commonwealth.
